A day in Budapest, Hungary

Image
So my summer 2017 travel posts have come to an end, with my last post on my day trip to Budapest. Budapest was about 3 hours by coach from Vienna, so it was a really early start. We decided to go with a tour company, because they picked us up from our hotel, and because we had only a day we thought it would be better as they could show us the main things. This was a total mistake though! As soon as we got to the Pest side (as Budapest is split into Buda and Pest by a river), they had booked us into a restaurant for AN HOUR AND 15 MINUTES, without making it clear that they were doing that. So we'd essentially lost almost an hour and a half, which is quite a lot considering we only had a day there. But anyway, at least the food was good. Paprika is a big thing in Hungarian cuisine, so we had some pretty tasty paprika chicken. Thank fully, a lot of the rest of the day was given as free time, so we managed to salvage and day and see as mu...

A day in Bratislava, Slovakia

Image
Continuing with my summer 2017 travel posts, I present to you..... Bratislava! Now,  Slovakia isn't really a place your mind springs to when you think of where to go in the summer. But it was only 2 hours from Vienna, so we decided to do a day trip there whilst we had the chance, because really, when were we going to be in Slovakia again? And it was honestly THE most amazing place. Probably one of the nicest places I've been to. If there was a word to describe the city, I would say unspoilt. Or maybe charming. Or medieval. I just fell in love (can you tell??) We had a tour from a local guide, who spoke good English and was really knowledgable about the history of the wonderful city. She took us around Old Town, which is the historic centre of Bratislava. The whole place was so picturesque, and there were loads of interesting things to see along the way. There are quite a few little statues in the town, all with their own stories. My favou...

Travels to Vienna

Image
So my travelling for this summer consisted of a week trip to Vienna. Whilst there, we couldn't not take advantage of the short journeys to Budapest and Bratislava, so we managed to cover 3 places (although Budapest was slightly rushed in a day). Each one was different in their own wonderful way, so I'll do separate posts for each. SO, I shall start with Vienna!  WARNING - excessive panorama shots    The first thing we did when stepping out of the airport at Vienna was to buy our underground tickets. At the machines, the ticket options were for a person, or a person with a dog. A city with an appreciation for dogs? I was going to like it here. With my last two holidays being India and Canada, I forgot that there are people that don't speak my language abroad. So it took a while to get used to the German, as well as a trip down memory lane to my year 8 German lessons.  Our hotel was 5 mins from Prater, a massive fairground/water park which was so lively at n...

Fresher Year: hints and tips

Seeing results day posts filling my social media feeds on Thursday made me so happy but also left me reflecting on my first year of uni (I know I always say this but whyyyyyyy does time go so quickly???? How am I moving into my first house next month????? What are electricity meters????) Overall, it's been  a good year. The start was a bit rocky, but it got so much better. I've compiled a few tips/thoughts, which should be taken with a pinch of salt because everyone's experiences are sooo different 1) ENJOY it- you're never going to be a fresher again, and you're probably never going to have that much free time so make the most of it- go out, get involved in societies, do as much extra curricular stuff as you want, without feeling guilty about giving studies a bit of a backseat.  No one regrets going out and trying something new, even if you don't stick with it, but people do regret doing too much work and not enjoying themselves enough when ...

Bubble Waffles @ Nosteagia, Green Park

Image
Carrying on with my London dessert posts, I introduce .... Nosteagia! You've no doubt seen their bubble waffles on Instagram. This is a van-business started by 2 graduate students who wanted to bring Asian and English food together, with the Bubble Waffle being inspired by the Egg Puff in Hong Kong.          Honestly, this place is a hidden gem. The van is positioned in a square area off the main road opposite Green Park, where there are a few other vans including hot dogs and hog roasts (which looked good but we were only interested in the dessert), with a grassy garden bit in the middle where you could sit. We were really lucky with the weather, so we sat in the garden area bit opposite the van, which was really peaceful considering we were in a touristy area. But on to what you actually want to know about - the dessert. I had the Cookie Monster- nutella, a chocolate chip cookie, cream and choco...

Ziferblat, Shoreditch

Image
When I found out I was going to study in London almost a year ago (how times flies), one of the first things I did was google 'cool things to do in London'. After quite a long time researching and making a mental list (in my defence, it was summer and I didn't have much else to do) I came across Ziferblat and was instantly attracted to the whole idea. Ziferblat (translates to dial/clock face in German) is basically a house in Shoreditch, inside of which everything  is free- you pay for the time and space  there, rather than the stuff  inside. It's something like 5p per minute and is basically a big free space for you to do whatever you want. From the outside, it doesn't give much away. In fact, I didn't really notice the door to get in, it just looked like any other office building on the street.  Once you get inside and up the stairs, you are greeted at a reception area by a lovely woman who explains how everything wor...

Milk Train, Covent Garden

Image
Apologies for the lack of posting- exam season was streeeess. But, now it's summer!! Feels good to have so much free time, more time than I know what to do with it. With this new found freedom there are so many things I want to do- one is a mission to try out as many dessert places as I can- in fact, my friends and I have come up with a list of the must-go ones. So I'll post about some of the good ones (typical, do I post about much else other than food). Sorry if it's a little boring, but if it is then just look at the pictures and drool. (creds to Naomi for this photo- those iPhone 6 cameras outdoing mine) Milk Train is a little shop in Covent Garden- much smaller than I expected actually. But the queue extended down the road, which is quite impressive considering it was a Friday afternoon.  The speciality of the shop is the fact that they put candy floss around the cone, but I don't actually like candy floss so I didn't bother. Maybe I should...
