Bababoom, Islington London

Image
As much as I love a Nandos, I'm all about experimenting with different flavours and cuisines. This weekend, I decided to branch out to an experimental Kebab place in Islington called Bababoom. It was a cosy restaurant about 5 minutes away from Highbury and Islington station. The music playing was so vibrant, and I actually found their Spotify playlist on their website which most restaurants don't do!  The menu itself was quite limited, but despite this I was still stuck between all of the choices. I ended up going for the s affron and orange chicken shish and  the Baba's fries (with house dukkah- I don't know what this actually was but it tasted amazing). The portion sizes were good and both the kebab and fries were really well spiced. I also tried the broadbean falafel with sweet potato hummus, which was so good! This was the first falafel variation I've tried and it definitely did not disappoint. The hummus was ...

Half Cup, Kings Cross

Image
Half Cup, a 5 minute walk from Kings Cross, has been on my brunch bucket list for a while. I've attempted to eat there before, however with a 40-minute wait at the time I didn't think it was worth it. This time the wait was only around 20 minutes (I did go a lot earlier, around 10:30) which wasn't too bad at all.  I guess the wait is due to the cafe itself being quite small inside. There was such a nice, cosy vibe and I loved the artwork and wooden benches.  I'm definitely more of a savoury than sweet person, however the sweet brunch options were too good to pass up! I ended up going for the Sweet Brioche French Toast- which had chocolate 'soil', caramel, rhubarb puree and was topped with a nutella mascarpone.  And needless to say, it looked and tasted amazing! And the flowers were so cute.  I also tried the Toasted Banana Bread, which had tahini yoghur...

The best place to dine in an igloo - The Coppa Club, Tower Bridge

Image
Anyone seen those iconic igloos along Tower Bridge on instagram? They are just idyllic, but super hard to get a hold of. I tried multiple times during the year to get one- thank fully, I was third time lucky! The igloos are placed along the river during the autumn/winter and paradise pods are there during the summer. I was SO hyped for this, and it definitely didn't disappoint. The igloos are for a maximum for 8 people- if you book for less than 6 people you share one. There were 6 of us so we got a whole one to ourselves. We won with the timing as well- 7-9pm, so we saw the views in daylight, sunset and at night. The view was amazing throughout, but at sunset was something else! The food and drink wasn't as expensive as I thought, considering the location and the fact that the igloo was free. The food was grill/pizza/pasta- I had a sourdough pizza which was good (not quite franco manca but still) and I got a White Sangria cocktail ( Sauvignon bla...

Doughnut Time

Image
I realise it's been almost a year since I did a 'dessert place in London' post, but I am slowly making my way through my dessert bucket list. So next up.... DOUGHNUT TIME. You'll have seen these amazing doughnuts all over Facebook and Instagram.  The Australian company have bought their amazing creations to London, and on a sunny post-exam day I couldn't resist a trip to Soho to try them out for myself.  The actual store tiny, but you can't miss the queue of people lining up for these masterpieces (or just window shopping and taking to be honest). I spent a good 5 minutes just looking at them in awe! They all looked incredibly, but in the end it was a toss-up between: Notorious P.I.G-  strawberry buttercream and glaze, topped with sprinkles and Percy Pigs  No share- dark chocolate glaze, roasted hazelnuts, feuilletine (crushed crepes apparently) and Ferrero Rocher Houston, we have biscoff ...

Where to get the BIGGEST pancakes in London- My Old Dutch, Soho

Image
I've been meaning to go to My Old Dutch for aaggeesss now, and on a couple of hours break we had between our lectures we decided to pop over for lunch in Holborn. Even from the outside, the restaurant looked colourful and vibrant. The inside was the same! It was a hard decision on which crepe to get- sweet or savoury???? I have a massive sweet tooth, but I'd never had a savoury crepe before. In the end, I went with a savoury one called 'Some like it hot'- chicken, cheese, onions and peppers and a lovely thick pancake. It all worked so well, and the chicken was really well spiced- I wasn't expecting it to be that good! The next time I went, I got the 'My Old Dutch'- smoked bacon, chicken, ham, peppers, mushrooms, sweetcorn and cheese. I didn't think you could get better than the 'Some Like It Hot', but I was wrong! I don't usually like having different meats in the same dish, but it worked so well, and the veggies and cheese ...

The best bits of university second year!

This revision period is hitting me haaaard.  Some (most)  of the time  I procrastinate and think about the fun things I did/have happened this year and plans for post exams, just to keep me sane and remind me that this year wasn't all that bad. So here goes my reminiscing.....  1) Seeing the GBBO contestants sat next to me in a restaurant- MAJOR fangirling moment 2) FINALLY going to Winter Wonderland, which you can read about if you're intrigued  3) Eating savoury pancakes bigger than my head for £5.95 (more about this in a later post, but it's My Old Dutch in Soho) 4) Having our own flat and excessively decorating it during halloween and christmas - our fairy lights are never coming down 5) Getting to visit Nanotechnology labs in the Royal Free Hospital and seeing what amazing things people are researching and how it will impact our future 6) Taking NOS and vodka shots for drug practicals  7) Going to The Mac Factory, whic...

The House of Minalima

Image
Do you even live in London if you don't follow The Londonist? Half my bucket list is made up from things I have seen on their videos. When I saw their video featuring a completely free Harry Potter exhibition right near me in Soho, I couldn't resist seeing what it was about. This creaky, rusty house is on Greek Street, and from the outside is so colourful and cute in contrast to the more dull buildings around (especially because I went during Pride Week, hence the rainbow flag). Eduardo Lima and Miraphora Mina (hence Minalima) worked on the graphics for Harry Potter, and in this house showcase some of their work. The house is 3 floors of exhibits, and it's exactly how you'd imagine the house to be- with creaky and narrow staircases, it feels like you're in the cupboard under the stairs with Harry. As you walk into the house, you are warmly greeted by the staff and a room full of Harry Potter merchandise- prints, postcards, books, Hogwarts...

Winter Wonderland: tips to make the most of it

Image
Happy December! And what better way to break in the season to be jolly than with a trip to Winter Wonderland? 'It's good but cold and expensive' is the response I got from every person who has been there so far- and I have to agree. But I'm going to share some hints to make your cold and expensive evening a little more special. First of all, there are 3 entrances to get into Winter Wonderland. Hint number 1: go through the MARBLE ARCH entrance! This is the way to go if you want to be greeted by the classic Winter Wonderland sign and feel the magic as soon as you step in. The other entrances aren't as good, and you have to walk a little way in before you get to the main attractions.  GET THE CHURROS. Freshly made and piping hot. The particular stall we went to had an option of chocolate sauce and Nutella- Nutella was more expensive and arguably tastes better but don't be fooled- if you choose chocolate sauce you actually get more  ;) Ther...

Fresher Year: hints and tips

Seeing results day posts filling my social media feeds on Thursday made me so happy but also left me reflecting on my first year of uni (I know I always say this but whyyyyyyy does time go so quickly???? How am I moving into my first house next month????? What are electricity meters????) Overall, it's been  a good year. The start was a bit rocky, but it got so much better. I've compiled a few tips/thoughts, which should be taken with a pinch of salt because everyone's experiences are sooo different 1) ENJOY it- you're never going to be a fresher again, and you're probably never going to have that much free time so make the most of it- go out, get involved in societies, do as much extra curricular stuff as you want, without feeling guilty about giving studies a bit of a backseat.  No one regrets going out and trying something new, even if you don't stick with it, but people do regret doing too much work and not enjoying themselves enough when ...

Bubble Waffles @ Nosteagia, Green Park

Image
Carrying on with my London dessert posts, I introduce .... Nosteagia! You've no doubt seen their bubble waffles on Instagram. This is a van-business started by 2 graduate students who wanted to bring Asian and English food together, with the Bubble Waffle being inspired by the Egg Puff in Hong Kong.          Honestly, this place is a hidden gem. The van is positioned in a square area off the main road opposite Green Park, where there are a few other vans including hot dogs and hog roasts (which looked good but we were only interested in the dessert), with a grassy garden bit in the middle where you could sit. We were really lucky with the weather, so we sat in the garden area bit opposite the van, which was really peaceful considering we were in a touristy area. But on to what you actually want to know about - the dessert. I had the Cookie Monster- nutella, a chocolate chip cookie, cream and choco...

Ziferblat, Shoreditch

Image
When I found out I was going to study in London almost a year ago (how times flies), one of the first things I did was google 'cool things to do in London'. After quite a long time researching and making a mental list (in my defence, it was summer and I didn't have much else to do) I came across Ziferblat and was instantly attracted to the whole idea. Ziferblat (translates to dial/clock face in German) is basically a house in Shoreditch, inside of which everything  is free- you pay for the time and space  there, rather than the stuff  inside. It's something like 5p per minute and is basically a big free space for you to do whatever you want. From the outside, it doesn't give much away. In fact, I didn't really notice the door to get in, it just looked like any other office building on the street.  Once you get inside and up the stairs, you are greeted at a reception area by a lovely woman who explains how everything wor...
