My Domestic Day

This weekend my poor mother was bedridden, so it was up to the rest of the Mandal family to fill her shoes in the housework department. Naturally my brother did none of it, so my Dad and I dished out the rest of the jobs. While he took care of the shopping and laundy, I changed bed sheets, hoovered and –believe it or not- COOKED. I usually fail at most of these jobs, so today was interesting…

Bed sheets - The pillows were easy enough, but the disaster came with the changing of the duvet cover. A normal person would do the whole ‘put the duvet in the sheet corners then shake it until the whole duvet is covered’ thing. Of course, me being me, I decided to use the hardest and most stupid way to get the duvet in…

It didn’t occur to me as I was climbing into the duvet cover that it was a stupid idea. Only when I got stuck and couldn’t get out that I realised I didn’t choose the best method. Needless to say, after about 10 oxygen-deprived seconds of struggling around in the material prison, I managed to find side with the buttons and let myself out. Even after all that effort, the duvet cover still was not neat enough for my liking, and so I admitted defeat and used the shaking method. So a note from me, which I’m pretty sure most of you wouldn’t do anyway because you’re not stupid, don’t try climbing into a duvet ☺

Hoovering- A breeze. I really like hoovering, something about it is so relaxing. Maybe it’s the feeling afterwards of having a clean room cause I’m a bit of a neat freak… either way I always jump at the chance to vacuum the house (apart from my brother’s room- it is a pig sty, I have to brace myself whenever I go in).

Cooking- something which I rarely do, because I am not very good at it! Baking I can do, and simple stuff like omelettes and noodles, but I was trusted with cooking dinner not just for myself but for my family as well, which meant I needed to make extra sure I wasn’t poisoning them. So I steered clear of cooking meat, and went for stir fry with prawns (thank you BBC food). I actually googled recipes suitable for kids to make, because I am really that bad and can’t deal with complicated recipes. I feel you all judging me for using kids recipes but it IT WORKED: it looked good, tasted good and didn’t poison anyone!

So there you have it- my seemingly boring day of household chores, which actually was more interesting than I thought. I definitely will not be cooking for a long time because it was so stressful and time consuming, but at least now I further appreciate the effort my mum puts in to cooking everyday! And all the effort needed to do all the housework… hmm maybe I should help out more often.
